Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I enter in more than one Division?

Yes you can enter in as many divisions as you like. The cost is $30 for the Pro Divisions (including International) and is free for the Freestyle, Amateur and divisions.

Also it doesn’t matter how many pro divisions you enter into. It’s a flat $30 fee.

2) What Should I wear?

It is recommended you wear comfortable clothing to help you move freely. However the clothing should be dark. This makes it easier for the judges to see your tricks and string movements against the clothing during your performance.

3) What should I bring?

  • Yo-Yos: Bring your collection of yo-yos, including your preferred competition yo-yos and backups in case of any issues. Make sure they are in good working condition and have spare strings available.
  • Strings: Pack extra yo-yo strings in case you need to replace a worn-out or broken string during the contest. It’s always a good idea to have spares on hand.
  • Tools: Carry any tools you may need for maintenance or adjustments, such as a yo-yo multitool or small screwdriver, to tighten or loosen axles or bearing seats if necessary.
  • Music: If you plan to compete in the pro or freestyle routines that requires music, ensure you have Uploaded your music. Also bring your routine’s music on a portable audio device (phone, MP3 player) along with backup copies on the day of the competition.
  • Water and Snacks: Staying hydrated and energized is essential, so bring a water bottle and some snacks to keep you fueled throughout the event. The venue will also sell basic food and drink beverages.
  • Money: Bring some cash or a credit card in case you want to purchase yo-yos, accessories, or merchandise from vendors at the event. Also you haven’t paid for your entry online, you may have to pay before competing.
  • Camera/Phone: Capture memorable moments by bringing a camera or using your phone to take pictures or videos of your performances, interactions with other yo-yo enthusiasts, and any highlights of the contest.
  • Notepad and Pen: Consider bringing a small notepad and pen to jot down notes, tricks, or ideas you come across during the contest. It can also be helpful for exchanging contact information with fellow yo-yo enthusiasts.
  • Positive Attitude: Lastly, bring a positive and friendly attitude. Yo-yo competitions are great opportunities to meet fellow enthusiasts, learn from others, and have fun. Engage with the yo-yo community and make lasting connections.

Remember to read the rules on music allowed, scoring rules, during the performance and also on start and stop points for your routines.

4. How Should I Prepare for the Competition?

Remember that the organisers designed this event to be fun, light hearted and for Yo Yo players across Australia to meet up, socialise and share their love of Yo Yo playing with each other. Therefore it should be treated as a community event and should not be taken too seriously.

That said there are six (6) pro division competitions and most of Australia’s top Yo Yo players will be there displaying their amazing skills, abilities and YoYo prowess for all the world to see.

So preparing for this competition involves honing your skills, perfecting your routine, and ensuring you’re physically and mentally ready for the event. Here are some steps to help you prepare effectively:

  • Practice Regularly: Dedicate consistent practice time to improve your yo-yo skills. Work on executing tricks cleanly, mastering difficult maneuvers, and refining your timing and rhythm. Regular practice will build muscle memory and enhance your performance.
  • Create a Routine: If the competition includes a freestyle routine, design and choreograph a routine that showcases your best tricks and skills. Plan the sequence, transitions, and music synchronization to create an engaging performance. Practice the routine extensively to ensure smooth execution.
  • Study the Competition Rules: Familiarize yourself with the competition rules and regulations. Understand the scoring criteria, time limits, division requirements, and any specific guidelines for tricks or routines. This knowledge will help you tailor your practice and performance to meet the expectations of the judges.
  • Seek Feedback: Participate in local yo-yo meetups, workshops, or clubs where experienced yo-yo players can provide feedback on your performance. They can offer valuable advice, suggest improvements, and help you refine your technique.
  • Manage Nerves: Competition nerves are natural, but learning to manage them is crucial. Practice your routine under simulated pressure to acclimate yourself to the stress of performing in front of an audience. Visualize success, practice deep breathing techniques, and develop strategies to stay focused and calm during your performance.
  • Attend Pre-Competition Events: Take advantage of any pre-competition events, workshops, or practice sessions organized by the competition. These opportunities allow you to become familiar with the venue, meet fellow competitors, and gain insights from experienced players.
  • Take Care of Yourself: Prioritize your physical and mental well-being. Get enough rest before the competition, eat nutritious meals, and stay hydrated. Engage in relaxation techniques like meditation or stretching to reduce tension and improve focus.
  • Pack Essentials: Prepare a checklist of items to bring to the competition, such as yo-yos, spare strings, tools, music, water, snacks, and any necessary paperwork. Being well-prepared ensures you have everything you need to perform at your best.
  • Arrive Early: Aim to arrive at the competition venue well in advance. This allows time for registration, warm-up, and familiarization with the stage and equipment. Being early also helps minimize stress and allows you to settle into the competition environment.
  • Stay Positive and Have Fun: Remember that competitions are not just about winning; they’re also opportunities to celebrate your love for yo-yoing and connect with the yo-yo community. Embrace the experience, enjoy watching other performers, and appreciate the chance to showcase your skills.

By following these preparation steps, you’ll be well-equipped to give your best performance at ANYC 2024. Good luck!
